According to the Finance Ministry, citizens whose annual income is between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh are required to file ITR. Also, filing of ITR has been made mandatory for those earning more than Rs 5 lakh per annum. The last date for filing delayed and amended ITR with taxpayers for the year 2022-23 was 31 December 2022.

According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes, taxpayers who have filed belated ITR or revised ITR with late penalty till 31st December 2022 will have to verify the information provided in the income tax return. Taxpayers can e-verify ITR. The board has fixed 30th January 2023 as the last date for this. That is, in the month of January, the taxpayers have to verify the ITR in any case.

What if ITR is not verified?
The Central Board of Direct Taxes in its directives clarified that if the ITR is not e-verified within the given time frame, it will be treated as invalid. This means filing your ITR will be futile. Hence before 30th January 2023 the taxpayer must confirm all the information provided in the ITR and e-verify the same. Failure to do so may result in income tax notices, legal action or fines.

ITR e-verification from website
Tax payers can follow online method to verify delayed or revised ITR. For this the taxpayer has to go to the official website of the Income Tax Department https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ and complete the process by selecting the e-verification option.
