Since there is no member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the search committee formed for the selection of Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, this committee will have to be constituted anew. This new committee will be constituted as per the rules of UGC. The governor’s office has also confirmed this. Therefore, Pune University will have to wait for a few more months to get a full-time vice-chancellor.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Pune University Dr. Nitin Karamalkar’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor ended on May 18. After that, the additional charge of the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University was Dr. Vice Chancellor of Babasaheb Ambedkar Technical University Dr. was entrusted to Karbhari Kale. The Vice-Chancellor selection process was stalled as the Governor did not approve the changes made by the Mahavikas Aghadi government in the University Act. The state government scrapped the proposed changes to the University Act after the July transition to power in the state.
After that, the Vice-Chancellor Selection Committee was appointed. However, as the number of members of the committee was not complete, the process was stalled. Even after the membership of the committee was completed, it did not include a representative of the UGC. However, despite this, the state government announced to implement the Vice-Chancellor selection process. Accordingly, the process of selecting the vice-chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University was started and the advertisement was also released.
According to this advertisement, the eligible persons were given a deadline till December 14 to apply for the post of Vice-Chancellor. Accordingly, many interested persons filed applications. However, now that a new committee comprising a representative of the UGC will be formed, the Vice-Chancellor process will be put on hold.
At the same time, there is a possibility that the aspirants will have to apply again and again. If this committee is not announced soon, many aspirants to become the Vice-Chancellor will drop out of the race.
‘No selection by rules’
Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers Organization (MFUCTO) has objected that the selection process of vice-chancellors of government universities is not done through the circular published by the UGC. Mphucto has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court for the Vice-Chancellor’s selection process to be done in the same way as the UGC has mentioned. A hearing has been held regarding this entire matter and instructions were given to the state government to present its views. Against this backdrop, the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University Vice-Chancellor selection process has been stopped suddenly. Therefore, if the Vice-Chancellor is selected according to the current advertisement, it will not be appropriate, the scholars of the state are criticizing. Keeping this in mind, a new vice-chancellor search committee is being formed.
