After completing her schooling from Moradabad, Ilma Afroz joined St. Stephen’s, Delhi. From there she pursued her graduation in philosophy. She considers the years spent at St. Stephen’s as the best of her life, where she learned a lot. Ilma’s hard work earned her a scholarship to Oxford University, where she completed her post-graduate studies.
Ilma did not have money for a ticket to go abroad at that time. For this she took the help of Chaudhary Dada of the village. She received a scholarship to Oxford University. But to meet the expenses, she took up teaching and taking care of the children. Meanwhile, her villagers had started telling her mother that she would now live abroad and would not return to India.
After graduation, Ilma Afroze moved to New York to participate in a volunteer program. There she got a good job offer in a financial estate company. But she always felt that her mother and country have a right to her education. That is why she returned to India and started preparing for the UPSC exam. In 2017, Ilma secured 217th rank in civil services exam. She was 26 years old then. Currently she is posted as SP SDRF in Shimla.
