New Delhi :
The Union Ministry of Health has included stents in the National List of Essential Medicines. This will help in reducing the cost of this life saving device. The central government has taken this decision after the recommendations made by the expert committee. According to Indian law, stents come under the Drug-Control Act. As they are life savers, there was a demand to include them in the list of essential medicines and control their prices. Similarly, the number of those who opposed him was also large. The prices of the stents will be announced soon after the government’s decision, sources said. Stents are used in the treatment of heart disease patients.
The government had constituted a National Standing Committee on Medicines (SNCM) in 2018 to review and revise the National List of Essential Medicines. SCNM submitted its final report on September 9 and it was fully accepted by the Ministry of Health. According to a notification issued recently by the Ministry of Health. SCNM on November 6 recommended inclusion of coronary stents in two categories in the list. Bare metal stents (BMS) and drug eluting stents (DES) including metallic DES and bioresorbable vascular scaffold (VBS)/biodegradable stents, the notification said. The Ministry of Health has accepted the recommendation of SCNM and notified the inclusion of coronary stents in NLEM 2022 with immediate effect, the notification said.
