In order to enable the economically weaker sections to live with dignity in the society and to get education and job opportunities, the central government had provided for 10 percent reservation for this section. The bill was approved by the Modi government in 2019. However, this decision was challenged in the Supreme Court. Almost 40 petitions were filed against this decision of the central government.

What is EWS?
EWS stands for Economically Weaker Sections. Individuals whose family income is less than eight lakhs per annum can get reservation in education and employment under EWS. This reservation is not for SC, ST, NT but in short for open category.
Who will benefit from EWS?
Open category families will benefit from this.
People belonging to SC, ST, OBC reservation will not get the benefit of this reservation
Persons whose family income is less than eight lakhs can get reservation in employment and education
The family farm of a person eligible for reservation should not exceed five acres
The area of the residential house should not be 1 thousand square feet or more
Area of residential house of families in municipal area should not exceed 900 square feet
1800 sq. ft. is the requirement for a family in non municipal or rural areas

How to get EWS certificate?
Before getting EWS certificate, you need to download EWS application form. After filling it, it has to be submitted to the Tehsil office along with the documents asked in the form. After verification from there you will get EWS certificate.
What documents are required?
- Aadhaar card of beneficiary and their father.
- TC / Exit Transcript of Beneficiary and their father.
- Ration card.
- Resident Certificate.
- Proof of Income (Satbara, 8A / Form 16 / Proof of Payment of Income Tax).
- Proof that the applicant or his family members are residents of Maharashtra on or before 13th October, 1967.
- Self declaration letter.
- Application in prescribed format.
- 3 passport photos.
How many years is EWS certificate valid for?
EWS certificate is valid for 1 year only.
